Many people are aware that Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) uses a 12-step program that alcoholics can follow to recover from their addictions. Though this program is essentially secular, the roots of the AA program were heavily influenced by Christianity and, indeed, that approach has been (re) adopted by Christians as a basis for Celebrate Recovery (CR), a Christ-centered 12-step program.

This lesson will describe both programs, sketch out this long-term relationship between Christianity and 12-step programs, and describe personal experiences with both programs. One of the recognized conclusions is that 12-step programs are also beneficial for a wide range of non-addicts, essentially any who struggle with “hurts, hang-ups, and habits” as CR describes it. Discussion is led by Mark Snell.
